About this Item

First edition. Large, thick quarto in deep maroon cloth hardcovers ornately lettered in gilt and black on front cover, rear cover decorated in black with design of fire apparatus (helmet, horn, axe). Patterned endpapers. 478 pp. with index, then current roster of department members, roster of pensioners. Advertising section at rear, many of the ads illusrated with engravings. Illustrated with photographic plates of officers, full companies, medals, headquarters building, the 1869 department, etc. A tight, fresh, clean example, by far the finest of the extremely few copies we have encountered; front hinge start but firm, gilt spine lettering tarnished. The official history of the Brooklyn, New York Fire Department, published some six years before Brooklyn consolidated with the rest of the boroughs to form greater New York City. The first Brooklyn fireman was appointed in 1772 and the first fire company organized in 1783 with the first engine coming into use in 1788. The work covers each of the ten districts and the companies within those districts. Bookseller Inventory # E13845B
