Description:

George Gibbs. Fires of Ambition. NY: D. Appleton and Company, 1923, 1st. printing, (vi), 443 pp. *** Near Fine in G dust jacket. From America's Jazz Age comes a tale of a young woman whose red hair, Irish wit, and indomitable will are her only possessions as she begins the road to success in New York's Garment District. The largest part of this novel takes place in the picturesque and somewhat theatric world of luxurious shops and the members of society who patronize them. Definitely a period novel. *** George Gibbs was a successful American novelist as well as an illustrator of cover art for the SATURDAY EVENING POST, LADIES HOME JOURNAL, AND REDBOOK. He wrote more than fifty (50) novels, many of which were adventure stories revolving around espionage in exotic locations. *** Bound in red cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering on the front cover and on spine. With the original color illustrated Dust Jacket (not price clipped) in a clear protective cover. The jacket illustration is a wrap-around sidewalk scene straight out of the 1920's. The covers are clean with almost no wear. The jacket is clean with moderate chipping at spine ends and corners, a chip on top edge of front panel, two short closed tears (repaired on verso with archival tape) on top edge of back panel, some moderate rubbing along joints. The contents are clean and complete in a good binding, some light foxing on end papers and on text block. Small bookseller label (Goodman's Manchester, NH) at bottom of front end paper. *** 7.5 inches tall by 5.25 inches. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description D. Appleton and Company // Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1923. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. Third Printing. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 443 pages; 1923 (hybrid edition/printing) Text block records D. Appleton with (3) rd printing noted on the final page of the text, but bound in cloth boards with a G&D imprint to the base of the spine cloth and with a Grosset & Dunlap issued dust jacket. Snugly bound and clean in original thatch payyerned brown cloth with titles lettered in black. Prior owner penned neatly to front endpage with 1926 date. Dust jacket is a wraparound pictorial jazz-age, flapper fashion scene; spine panel is sunned and faded. Light chipping and rubbing at edges. Old yellowed cello tape reinforcements to the spine ends. In this instance it appears Grosst purchased unsold text blocks and had them bound in unchanged to boards with their imprint. VG/G+. Seller Inventory # 35146
