About this Item

Ooka Shohei, as he would be referred to in Japanese, was one of the leading novelists of the postwar Japanese literary resurgence. His unforgettable account of the privation of a lone Japanese soldier in the desolate aftermath of World War II in the Philippines is a bleak and compelling account of the human condition. Ooka committed suicide shortly after he completed the novel. This scarce copy is bumped at the edges, and previous owner's attractive bookplate is on the ffep. The DJ shows modest wear along the spine with a slight chip missing at the top. Wear also visible at the upper and lower edges. A Haunting Novel Set in the Philippines in the Immediate Postwar, When a Starving and Isolated Soldier Faces the a World That Appears to Have Nothing Left for Him. Translated By Ivan Morris.
