About this Item

First edition thus, paper covers; a two-page corrigenda et addenda supplement by Frances Ingemann, Haskins Laboratories, is laid in; Sebeok and Raun have prepared this facsimile edition with introduction and analysis from an anonymously-authored manuscript Sebeok found in his evaluation of the Cheremis works in the Bonaparte Collection in the Newberry Library in Chicago; according to Raun's section in the introduction which discusses the possible authorship of the book (pp. 12-13), the author might have been Archbishop Veniamin Pucek-Grigorovich (1706-82) whose authorship of the first grammars of Chuvash and Votyak stands on firmer ground; this book is from the library of the anthropologist William H. Gilbert, Jr. with his signature in pencil on the front free endpaper and my notation that I received it from him Christmas Day 1981; the front cover has a pencil check mark above and an underline below the "S" in Sebeok, also the word "Cheremis" is underlined and there is a pencilled date "3/62" in the upper left corner and the price "$3.75" in the upper right corner; the covers and edges show some foxing and browning, light bumps to the corners; otherwise the book is tight, clean, and unread, yielding a good VG+ rating; covers are light gray with black lettering on the front and spine; on the back is a list of four other Newberry publications of interest to linguists and anthropologists which had appeared up to that time; 9 3/8 inches, iii + 65 (introduction & analysis) + 136 (facsimile) numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
