STIRLING, William Alexander. First Earl of: The Earl of Stirling's Register of Royal Letters Relative tot he Affairs of Scotland and Nova Scotia from 1615 to 1635. Edinburgh. 1885. Two volumes. [2],1xii;[2],411;[3],[412]-887pp. Quarto. Original cloth boards rebacked with new cloth spines. Untrimmed. Internally fine. One of 150 sets. Lande S2140. A privately printed trove of important documents relating to the Earl of Stirling's attempt to colonize Nova Scotia. Sir William Alexander, a close friend of Charles I and later the self-styled Earl of Stirling, was given the grant of Nova Scotia by James I in 1621. He immediately began to work toward the creation of a colony, and in 1624 published "a weighty, vigorous, and statesmanlike" tract entitled An Encouragement to Colonies. His plan was to found a Scottish colony in Nova Scotia, to be called New Scotland. Had Alexander been successful, he might have greatly changed the nature of English settlement in North America. This vast compendium of first hand documents was issued in a limited edition for private circulation and is quite rare. Bookseller Inventory # 33381
