Elephant Folio (16 x 22 inches) consisting of 56 India paper sheets, numbered I to LVI, housed in a large portfolio covered in dark blue buckram. The images measure 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches on paper mounts measuring 16 x 22 inches.*** SOLD AS IS: all the sheets have some foxing, some are minimal but others are much more extensive. This very scarce set, of the London edition, is priced accordingly. *** The portfolio is scuffed and worn, with some ripples in the buckram cover fabric, but fully intact with no damage to its structure designed to house the individual sheets. ** The illustrator completed his drawings, layout and lettering in pencil, with photo-engraving and printing by Goupil & Co. of Paris. Dedicated to Charles Darwin, on a preliminary sheet. Each page has a black and white illustration with some text, within decorative panels in Crane's signature Arts & Crafts Movement style. Many critics believe this to be the illustrator's magnum opus. Most of these illustrations were drawn in 1878-79 while Crane was staying in The Sherwood Forest, the locale the author selected for his fairy tale adventure, a May Day variation on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." **Due to the size and weight of this volume, expect additional shipping charges beyond our standard fee. Please inquire as to exact cost. Despite the condition of the India paper illustrations, this is a scarce and sought after collection of one of Crane's most important works. Bookseller Inventory #
