About this title

Some of Michigan's First Ladies reveled in the spotlight accorded them by virtue of being married to the Governor of the State. Others made the best of their non-elected, non-paying jobs. This edition of the "First Ladies of Michigan" provides an insight into the lives of these women from the hardships of the Territorial Governor's First Lady, to Governor John Engler's wife, Michelle, today. Profiles of Michigan's three women Lieutenant Governors are also included: Matilda Dodge Wilson, Martha Griffiths and Connie Binsfeld.

About the Author:

Willah Weddon is a past president of the Michigan Press Women, served as secretary of the National Federation of Press Women, Inc., and is a past president of the Michigan State Medical Auxiliary. She received a B.A. from Western Michigan University and did graduate work through the University of Michigan. She founded the Women's News Bureau at the Capitol in Lansing and was also a regular columists for several magazines. Weddon lives on a farm near Stockbridge, Michigan, where she and her husband, Ed, raised their five children. She has won more than 100 awards for writing photography, public relations and editing. In 1999 Weddon won the Martha Rayne Award for research about media history, sponsored by the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame, for her book, Michigan Press Women, Today and Yesterday.
