About this Item

Plain paper wraps; 8vo; pp. 41, [2] (blank, colophon); with decorated title-page printed in red and black, and decorative initial drawn in pencil to begin the text. "Specially printed" on the occasion of the 65th birthday of H. A. Warmelink (a notary public in Amsterdam), this is the first book published in 12-point Emergo type -- a type designed by Hartz while he was in hiding during WWII, and never released. As we find no record of this volume in the marketplace, nor in library holdings, and taking into account the unadorned binding and handwritten initial, we speculate that this may be Hartz's working copy. In any case, it is exceedingly scarce. Thin split in the wrappers along spine, and wrappers just a little dust-soiled; but text block is nice and bright. The firm of Joh. Enschedé en Zonen was established in Haarlem (Netherlands) in 1703. It is widely recognized as one of Hollandís finest printing houses. Enschedé prints banknotes and stamps for the Dutch government, fine art catalogues, and commercial high-quality work. Sem (Samuel Louis) Hartz joined Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in 1936 as an apprentice engraver (primarily copper). In later years he would become the firmís Art Director, succeeding Jan van Krimpen. He collaborated with Cees van Dijk on his own press, Tuinwijk, which published 20 editions -- now rather scarce and desirable. An important part of Hartz's personal archive went to the Library of the University of Amsterdam after his death, and letters and design drawings sold to the Hague Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum. Emergo is a contemporary typeface with classical proportions and pronounced serifs. Bookseller Inventory # LD7839
