The handbook "Teaching of First-Year Science" is not included. xii + 484pp. + ix +118pp. John Charles Hessler (1869-1944) was a professor of Chemistry at James Millikin University in Decatur, IL who became President of that institution in 1919. This title was one of the first textbooks in general science ever created for High School Freshman, published in 1915. In the words of the author, this textbook ".is intended to stimulate uncommon thinking about common things, to produce a scientific attitude toward everyday problems, to give scientific knowledge to as large a body of our people as possible in order that modern inventions may be the tools and not merely the toys of the men and women into whose hands they are placed." Hardcover has brown cloth boards with gold lettering on spine and front, but no DJ. Prior own on front and rear end-papers. Front end page through title page torn out separating cove from text. Rear gutter also torn, but repaired with clear tape to keep cover with text. Text tightly bound and complete aside from exceptions noted. Interior tight, clean and otherwise unmarked.
