About this Item

Octavo, contemporary mottled calf, worn, spine ends chipped, joints cracked, engraved title foxed and with signature at lower edge. It is quite likely that Ireland chose to publish this poem under a pseudonymn due to his notoriety as a forger of Shakespeare documents and writings. His forgeries gulled a wide range of the English literary establishment including Shakespearian scholars from Steevens and Chalmers to such figures as James Boswell. Ireland's later ventures into literature included poems such as the one offered here, written in a style similar to that of Robert Bloomfield's and perhaps not too coincidentally published by Bloomfield's publishers, in a format and style reminiscent of Bloomfield's books.
