From Booklist: This directory of 420 venture-capital investors and strategic partners that "collectively have more than $16 billion in venture capital available to invest in the right companies" is intended to assist the entrepreneur in search of potential sources of capital for his or her business. In the brief introductory chapters, author Silver offers an overview of the entrepreneurial process and some practical advice to the businessperson attempting a venture. The author has published numerous books and articles on entrepreneurship and venture-capital and has himself worked in venture capital investing and merchant banking.
The directory is divided into five categories, each alphabetically arranged. The largest is the broad category of "Generic Venture Funds," followed by "Medical/Biotech/High Technology Venture Funds," "SSBIC/Minority Venture Funds," "Socially Useful Venture Funds," and "Strategic Partners." Individual entries offer address, telephone and fax numbers, brief information about the size of the fund, investment criteria ("start-up only," "Ohio only"), companies in which the fund has invested, industry preference, and names of officers, with some background on these individuals where available. The directory lacks a master list of companies, so any search for a known company must be conducted in all five categories. Although specific industry preferences are given in the entries, there is no efficient way to find funds with an interest in, for example, communications or entertainment. The book's index covers only the introductory chapters. Foreign venture-capital firms are integrated into the existing lists, so it is not possible to readily determine how many are present.
Comparison must be made to the annual Pratt's Guide to Venture Capital Sources (Oryx, $195). Pratt's is arranged by state, with a complete master index of companies, as well as a detailed index of industry preferences and individual's names. Selected foreign venture-capital firms are listed separately. However, Pratt's does not list minority firms separately, so a user seeking such a listing would be better served by Fitzroy. Pratt's contains nearly twice the number of entries found in Fitzroy, so there is inevitably some overlap in entries between them, but there are a surprising number of unique entries in Fitzroy. Of the listing of 33 SSBIC/minority venture funds in Fitzroy, only 10 appeared in the master company list of Pratt's.
The Fitzroy Dearborn Directory of Venture Capital Funds is recommended for business collections serving the entrepreneurial community. The price of Pratt's has climbed steadily in recent years, which may make Fitzroy an attractive alternative for collections on a limited budget. But collections currently receiving Pratt's should continue to do so (funds permitting), adding Fitzroy as a useful complement. Smaller collections that can afford only one such directory may confidently choose either, understanding the limitations of each as described above.
