About this Item

With dedication leaf and publisher's catalogue. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original backstrip laid down, marbled edges. A fine copy from the library of the Earl of Ilchester, with his bookplate and Jerry Stannard's label. A new edition of Tusser's popular work on home economics; a poem in rhyming couplets recording the country year, first published in 1557. This edition contains "notes, georgical (sic), illustrative, and explanatory, a glossary and other improvements" by William Mavor. Tusser provides a mix of instruction and observation about farming and country customs which offers a fascinating insight into life in Tudor England, and the work records many terms and proverbs in print for the first time.Tusser (1524-1580) served William I as a musician. He married, and settled as a farmer trading in oxen, sheep, dairies, and grain of all kinds. This work was first published as A hundreth good pointes in 1557 and as Five hundreth points in 1573.
