Hardcover in emerald green cloth lettered in gilt and decorated with design of the family. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: " With love from Mrs Pepper and the Five Little Peppers--also from/ Margaret Sidney/ Mrs. Daniel Lothrop/ March 21st, 1919". Later printing (Thrity-Sixth Thousand stated). 461 pp. Frontispiece and 12 additional illstrations. Tight, very good example, some moderate rubbing to the extremities, bookplate front pastedown. Books signed by Sidney (actually Harriet Mulford Stone Lothrop, 1844-1924) are remarkably scarce. She began her career in 1878 by submitting pieces featuring The Peppers to "Wide Awake" magazine for children. The publisher, Daniel Lothrop, whom she later married and whose publishing business she contined to run after his death, found them to be very popular. In 1881, she wrote the first Five Little Peppers book and it and all the subsequent books in the series was published under the pen name Margaret Sidney. The Five Little Peppers books remain one of the best-selling children's series books of all time. Bookseller Inventory # E15349B
