Quarto. , 339, , , 324, pp. Contemporary blind and gilt stamped half morocco over red cloth, with gold lettering on spines. All edges gilt. Binding signed by Vigneau & Pasquier. Moire endpapers. Decorative initials. Originally published in 1847, Les Fleurs Animées (The Flowers Personified) is both a satirical and poetic collection of botanical illustrations. Considered by many to be a masterpiece, this book features 54 etched and hand-colored illustrations (including both additional illustrated titles) depicting the enchanting world of floral maidens. Parisian cartoonist J.J Grandville illustrated this series of delightful prints in which each female figure is richly costumed in the leaves, blossoms and garlands that designate her flower. She presides in an appropriate 'natural' setting, often surrounded by anthropomorphised insects and birds that pay her hommage. These poetic interpretations of nature are a fetching example of mid-19th-century literary and artistic invention. Each plate is protected with a tissue-guard. "Les Fleurs Animées" is Grandville's last work, and was published in 1847, the year of his death. With its mix of the satirical and poetic, the book is considered to be one of his most supreme achievements. Some age wear on binding with joints and corners heavily rubbed. Offsetting on endpapers. Plates between pp 6-7 of second volume disbound but present. Text in French. Bindings in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good, plates in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory #
