About this Item

A beautiful example of this title. In reddish-brown cloth with a gilt pictorial cover and spine. The gilt cover illustration shows a sailor throwing a bomb with a lit fuse overboard. The spine has a gilt illustration of the giant ship. The covers are very clean with still fairly bright gilt. 2 corners are slightly worn at their tips and there are several small nicks in the covers' sides. The spine ends have the slightest fraying - overall very good, unworn edges with tightly attached covers. The center of a bookplate has been removed from the front inner cover. Pagination: 2 pale yellow frontpapers; (blank); Illustration of the great ship under a tissue guard; Title Page; (blank); A page with 2 letters relating the sale of the translation rights from Hetzel in Paris to Sampson, Low in London for the U.K. edition and the sale of those rights to Scribner's from Sampson, Low (this leaf has a waterstain in the lower left corner. There is no stain on the facing pages - it must have been stained before this page with the copy of the letters was bound into the book; (blank); "List Of illustrations" (2 pages with 42 listed illustrations); 196 pages of "A Floating City'; Pages 197-287 are "The Blockade Runners"; 4 page catalog; 2 endpapers. One signature at the back is a little shaky. The pages are clean and crisp with a little foxing to the last pages. Bookseller Inventory # 9899
