About this title

A collection of nine stories and a novella set in the American West, centering on themes such as familiar emotions and human situations

From Library Journal:

The epigraph to this collection hints at a prominent theme: "Until we die our lives are on the mend." Most of the stories are set in the rugged outreaches of Montana, among ordinary men and women "on the mend"waitresses; luckless, burned-out laborers; deserted husbandstough enough to survive the changes, misfortunes, and disasters that the very landscape seems to foster. In the title story a sister and her lawman brother recount in flashback an eerie tale of adulterous deceit and death precipitated by a flood. "The Last Photograph of Lyle Pettibone" is an elegiac reminiscence of the Wobbly era; "The Oriental Limited," a highly stylized novella, suspenseful and quaint. Long's view of life is level and direct, as rugged and ruthlessly true as his western landscape. A solid followup to his Home Fires (LJ 11/15/82), another story collection.
