2 Volumes. 8vo (21.6 x 13.3 cm). Modern half calf and marble boards; raised bands, gilt panels, black morocco labels. Collation: Vol.1- li, [1], 354pp; Vol. 2- xii, 464pp. Marginal browning on title pages; occasional light foxing to text. The date has also been added by at the foot of each title page by an early hand.The two volumes are arranged by seasons following a lengthy Introduction which gives some historical background on plants and suggestions on grouping. Volume 1 deals with plants one finds flowering in the Spring. Volume 2 covers Summer and Autumn. Each chapter is an extensive description and historical reference for an individual plant that is often complemented with quotations from poetry. A chapter begins with the common and Latin names at the top. Both the Natural Order and Linnean Class is provided prior to discussion of the plant. Henry Phillips, (1779&1840), writer on horticulture, was born in Henfield, Sussex. Phillips was a member of the Horticultural Society and, in 1825, was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society. During the 1820s and early 1830s he published a number of botanical works, including Pomarium Brittanicum (1820), History of Cultivated Vegetables (1822), Sylva florifera: the Shrubbery Historically and Botanically Treated (1823), Flora Historica(1824), and Companion for the Orchard (1831).(ODNB).
