About this Item

A Fine 'Modern' Automata"The Flower Girl"[MUSICAL AUTOMATA]. The Flower Girl. [no place, no date: ca. 1980?].Cased Automata. Case size: 23 x 19 x 5 5/8 inches; 583 x 482 x 143 mm. Window size: 19 1/4 x 15 1/8 inches; 490 x 385 mm. The background is a hand-painted 'rolling hills' scene with the Flower Girl doll standing, holding in her left hand a basket of dried flowers. She is set within an intricate arrangement of dried branches, flowers and butterflies. The wind-up 'Flower Girl' doll [with original brass key], dressed in white 'Queen Anne' lace with a white lace bonnet, moves gently to Johannes Brahms most famous lullaby "Good evening, good night" or "Cradle Song" which was first published in 1868. Original red velvet covered wooden box, with glass cover and gold-painted wooden frame. The back of the automata with original hinged velvet covered stand. The glass in engraved "Tiffany" at the top and "The Flower Girl / 1884" at the bottom. The wooden frame is engraved at the bottom "London-Paris Tiffany Studios". The original paper label on the back states: "Made exclusively for / Tiffany / Studios / London - Paris - New York / The Great Parisian Exhibition / 1884 / Exposition / d'Art / No. 16 [handwritten in black ink]/Gold Medal/of Merit/ Loci Universal Exhibition/ Music Automata". A few small surface chips to the gilt-painted frame, otherwise near fine and in perfect working order.Although there are 'spurious' Tiffany markings on the box and the glass, and a 'spurious' Tiffany Studios label on the back - this Automata is a fine example of one of the few 'modern' forgeries that have appeared on the market over the past thirty odd years. Although 'modern' this is a superb example - and it really does look like and work like a real antique late nineteenth century piece. Bookseller Inventory # 03658
