About this title

This book describes the flying years and non flying years of Richard 'Bill' Boult. (With foreword by Air Vice-Marshal P A Latham CB AFC RAF). The book contains a detailed and very readable account of what post war RAF training and service was really like. It follows the career of Richard Boult from his initial officer and flying training at RAFC Cranwell and describes service life in the air and on the ground, tracing the course of trans-sonic and super-sonic jet training. It then provides a vivid picture of the experiences of a typical GD officer serving at Gan in the Indian Ocean and Singapore. Containing constructive criticism of leadership training in the RAF, this is one man's view of life and learning in the RAF during challenging and changing times. In addition, it includes a 'tyro's guide' to the basic techniques of flight and flying. From a successful secondary career with the Industrial Society, Richard Boult goes on to draw parallels between military management practices and leadership training in the business sector. It is a book with a tale to tell and is a source of sound opinions and shared memories.

About the Author:

Richard Boult was born in 1931, educated at Shrewsbury and attended the RAF College Cranwell where his service career started. Richard's active flying years occupied the tense period of the Cold War. After squadron tours in Northern Europe, he became a test pilot at Boscombe Down during the development of the English Electric Lightning, a high point in his flying career. Another high point was as a Squadron Commander at the Officer Cadet Training Unit, RAF Henlow. Leaving the RAF he found a second career with the Industrial Society. With his own consultancy, he has subsequently worked for British Executive Service Overseas (BESO), training in Russia, Ukraine and Romania. He has also worked for the Prince's Trust. Richard enjoys sailing and when not afloat in Chichester Harbour, is either walking in the country side or writing books.
