About this title

Synopsis:

Andrew Haldran decides not to follow the traditional pattern of being genetically Augumented which forces his father to take a job on another world to earn enough money to support his son's decision.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 6-9-In an undated future, teens on Earth choose their field of "Augmentation" by the time they are 17. Augmentation genetically focuses teens' abilities for their chosen occupation while allowing other skills to wither. Andrew, 15, wants to remain a generalist. Supporting his daring decision, his father, a diplomat, takes a lucrative job with a private company on the planet Miners World. Humans go there to mine the population's knowledge of "the highest forms of technology yet discovered." However, when the family arrives, they observe that the humans cannot work together, and that the two variants of aliens seem completely unrelated. The newcomer meets Tomas Chalder, a beetlelike creature who supports the human population by guiding their interface with the planet, and realizes that Chalder was once a human and has changed in some way. The youth works to unravel the mystery and observes that the unrelated alien species are in fact symbiotic. The novel reads quickly and is often exciting. However, the many stories that the teen composes for his sisters divert attention from the main action. Also, while the simplistic and didactic plot builds to an interesting climax, the ending is anticlimactic as the family returns to Earth where Andrew will reconsider the Augmentation issue now that he understands better what he might gain and lose as a creative person. This novel offers possibilities, but is not likely to find wide readership.

Store Description

The books listed on ABE are not always available in our stores. Please do not call our store locations for these items. With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as "1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan. Members ABAA, ILAB.
