Its name is derived from the thirty six forts which at one time represented the glory of Chhattisgarh Rattanpur and has a population of about four million. "The people of the region belonged largely to the lower castes and are illiterate, superstitious and shiftless. Yet much of their folklore, which like that of other countries, is the embodiment of their ideals, indicates that they are longing for something better" (from brief introduction/map.)
