About this Item

New York, 1879. Small octavo, original red cloth stamped in black. 361 pages, plus ads. Old engraved bookplate of J.H. Guild, M.D, Rupert, Vermont. Inner hinges cracked, but otherwise a sound, bright copy in very good condition. A novel about Greensboro, North Carolina during Reconstruction, where Tourgee had moved in 1865, after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. The novel, which is partially autobiographical, was a best-seller in its day. Tourgee was a Superior Court judge from 1868 to 1874, but was branded a carpetbag jurist. Disliked by many, his life was often threatened, and he left Greensboro in 1876 and North Carolina in 1879. Tourgee argued important civil rights cases before the Supreme Court, but none of them was successful. In 1897 Tourgee was appointed consul to France, where he died in 1905. His novel provides an early literary picture of Reconstruction, including references to the Ku Klux Klan. Bookseller Inventory # 2151
