Sole edition of this treatise on classical and medieval archaeology, covering Athens, Rome, Balbek, Palmyra, Paestum, Thebes (in Egypt), Persepolis, and Pompeii, among other sites of significance. A companion work to his "Encyclop?dia of Antiquities," first published in 1825 (London, 2 vols. 4to). Illustrated with 11 engraved plates and in-text engravings. The frontispiece illustration is titled "View of a Palace at Thebes." 4to. Frontis., xlvii, [1], 348 pp.; 11 plts. (incl. frontis.) NSTC 2F11593. 19th-century quarter cloth over plain paper boards. Binding much worn: Boards soiled, separated, chipped, with outer third of front cover gone; spine cloth gone. Title-page soiled. Light soiling in some margins. Stains at lower edge of several pages and plates. Shallow chipping to corners and outer edges of frontispiece, title-page, and some early and later leaves. A few dog-ears.
