This text is divided into four parts: exploring theoretical paradigms in design, development and enactment of PDSs; standard-based teacher education and PDSs; best practices profiles of PDSs that advance understanding of research in the field; and toward a research agenda that strengthens PDSs.

About the Author:

Irma Guadarrama is Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at the University of Houston.

Dr. Guadarrama teaches and conducts research in the areas of language education, cultural diversity, and teacher education. Her research in professional development schools focuses on school reform and its impact on schools with minority student populations from diverse language, cultural, and SES backgrounds. She was the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Education and has conducted research and presented research papers in Mexico.

Jon Ramsey is Associate Professor in Science Education in the College of Education at the University of Houston where he serves as Director of Elementary Teacher Education. His research interests include science environmental education. Dr. Ramsey teaches science education courses that focus on teaching methods, the curriculum, and issues and trends. He was recently honored with the research award from the National North American Association for Environmental Education.

Janice Nath is a professor at the University of Houston–Downtown in the Urban Education Department. She has been actively involved in fieldbased teacher education for many years, formerly serving as the chair and program chair of the AERA PDRS SIG (American Education Research Association Professional Development School Research Special Interest Group). She served as the Coordinator for Elementary Education, Director of the PUMA TRACS Program for Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification, Assistant Director of the Internship Program, and she headed a Professional Development School (PDS) site for many years in her recent position at the University of Houston–Main Campus. She is co-editor of Becoming a Teacher in Texas on the professional development aspect of Texas teacher certification for elementary and secondary education.
