About this Item

GALSWORTHY, John. The Forsyte Saga. Original cloth housed in in custom green morocco-backed slipcase, raised spine bands, compartments gilt, inner cloth chemise. London: William Heinemann, 1922. First edition. Marrot, p.34. Presentation inscription on front free endpaper: "Inscribed for the author of "The Bellamy Trial" Nancy Noyes Hart with the admiration of John Galsworthy, April 11, 1931." Hart was an American writer. The Bellamy Trial is her best, and best remembered, work. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1927 and is a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone mystery. The Bellamy Trial is considered to be the first true legal thriller of any note; it was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, published in book form, and later dramatized. According to Julian Symons, the original publication of this book marked the start of serialized novels replacing short crime stories as commercial articles. A fine copy.
