About this Item

16 oversize newsprint pages. Color illustration on front page. Back page has a "Vignettes of Life" feature: a series of color comic panels by Kempt Starrett, collectively titled "More Isolationists." ~Near fine condition. No edge tears or other damage; only the slightest age toning to edges and occasional, faint spotting. ~~The Star Weekly was a weekend supplement to the Toronto Star newspaper, and it was also sold as a stand-alone publication in other cities in Canada. It consisted of four parts: the main section, a magazine section, a comic section, and the "complete novel" section. Offered here is the "complete novel" section of the Saturday, November 3, 1951 issue, which contains Frank Slaughter's novel in its entirety. Many issues of the Star Weekly complete novel section state that the novel therein is the first appearance ever, but this issue does not have that statement. However, the 1951 publication date does correspond to the year of publication of the Doubleday first edition, and it is possible that this may be the first Canadian appearance. Fort Everglades is one of the earlier novels in Slaughter's prolific writing career, and his third adult novel set in Florida. It takes place at the time of the Second Seminole War of 1835-42. From the Fort's location on the Miami River, the U.S. troops plan to invade the Everglades. Interesting to note is that the Warner Brothers movie which came out later the same year, "Distant Drums," starring Gary Cooper, had taken the liberty of using numerous scenes from this novel, and were forced to purchase the movie rights after the fact. A nice collectible piece of ephemera for collectors of historical or Florida-based fiction. Scarce. Size: 11" x 15.25". Bookseller Inventory # 001514
