About this Item

The collectible first issue of "Fortune", with a stunningly opulent lay-out and graphics that transcend the monthly magazine genre and were at the time a defying fillip against the pervasive belt-tightening wrought by the Depression. Folio. 35.5 by 28.5 cm. 184 pp. "Fortune" was Henry Luce's second magazine after "Time", and at the time it was a bold idea to bring out a magazine that covered and celebrated business with the stock market crash a recent memory and the unprecedented contraction of the economy and employment looming with no end in sight. The beauty of the graphics is true of both the articles and the advertisements, which also featured for the time a generous amount of color. The typography also exudes an elegance, and the aesthetic qualities of the issue ensured that readers would not casually toss away their copy after a quick read-through. Moderate wear to the cover, with one to two inch closed tears along the front joint and some light soiling and corner creasing. Within, minor corner creasing to some of the leaves, and a few instances of light soiling. Overall, this is a clean, appealing copy. Bookseller Inventory # 004736

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
