About this Item

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1929. Quarto, bound in quarter vellum and gilt-stamped burgundy cloth boards. 62 pages, illustrated on every page with drawings by Cecil Aldin. One of 250 copies, signed by Patrick Chalmers and Cecil Aldin. A very good to fine copy. First Edition. A beautifully illustrated collection of fox-hunting poems. Cecil Aldin (1870-1935) was an English illustrator who achieved early success as a comic illustrator, contributing to numerous periodicals in the 1890's and also designing posters. He was an especially avid hunter (he became Master of the South Berks Foxhounds), and confessed frankly that he practiced art for the sole purpose of obtaining the wherewithal to hunt. Even so he was immensely popular for a long period of time. As a book illustrator he excelled in the depiction of hounds and horses and outdoor sports like fox hunting, and became one of the leading spirits in the renaissance of British sporting art.
