Pages mainly not cut open at front and on top. Text and pages inside clean. With a frontispiece-portrait of the Field-Marshal wearing his uniform and many further portraits on plates as well as some plans and maps on plates and several times folded. (one with a tear) Englisch B06-06-05F|1. Stock 77|4185DB Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 444 21x14,5 cm. Red cloth binding with blind embossing on both covers and gilt back title. Boards are bound in same red cloth, and show extensive, faint discoloration on covers. Moderate shelf wear to edges of boards and fore corners. Bumping to fore corners and ends of spine. Small stains on spine. Text block shows expected age toning, with foxing on fore edge and minor shelf wear on bottom edge. Foxing on endpapers and lightly on page faces throughout book. Splitting at front hinge. Gutters are cracked in some places, most heavily at the gutter between pages 466-467. Shelved in Room A. Illustrated with forty-four plates, eight of which are folding. Collated complete. An account of the author's experiences in India over forty-one years. Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, Roberts joined the East India Company Army and served as a young officer in the Indian Rebellion. During this time he was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry before being transferred to the the British Army where he fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Written by Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, a British Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Bound in full tree calf. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and minor loss to the head and tail of the spine. Cracks to the joints. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound.
