About this Item

8vo. pp. 252, [4p. adverts], [8p. adverts - works of A. J. Davis]. Includes 142 woodcut engravings with the text. Green publisher's cloth; re-backed preserving the original spine; minor rubbing; corners a bit bumped. End papers are renewed after 19th century style; pages are generally clean; occasional light pencil mark; some wrinkling on lower corner of pp.35-36. Andrew Jackson Davis (1826-1910) often called the Seer of Poughkeepsie was an American spiritualist, clairvoyant and social reformer. "The Fountain" is the author's attempt to explain his spiritual and social doctrines in a more approachable fashion - written to "instruct persons of every age." The book, however, is not a children's work. The "Bibliography of Progressive Literature" describes it as "containing comments upon the errors and extremes of many in the ranks of Spiritualism; also treating of the essential conditions of human progress, etc." [Biblio. of Progressive Lit., p.38].
