Description:

Edited by James I. Robertson Jr. Small 8vo. Grey cloth, pictorial dust jacket. xvi, 362pp, (7pp). Frontispiece, illustrations, map endpapers. Near fine/very good. Jacket slightly edgeworn. Tight and handsome fourth printing of this facsimile of the definitive 1906 second edition -- with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a good content Typed Letter Signed from Robertson, 1p, 8½" X 6", Iowa City, IA, 1960 July 29. Addressed to noted Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "Civil War History" letterhead, Robertson (that publication's editor) asks Gates to review Murat Halstead's "Three Against Lincoln." He remarks, "We would like the review to be no more than 350 words and as much a critical analysis of the book's statements as a summary of its contents." Chats about his work schedule, closing with, "Why don't you come down to Washington on October 11 and give me moral support when I defend Longstreet for their C[ivil]W[ar]R[ound]T[able]?" Signed simply "Bud" in blue fountain pen, the nickname he used among friends. Robertson wrote the entry for this title in the Nevins bibliography, where he remarks: "This embellished memoir, as witty as it is informative, is in a class with volumes by Billings and McCarthy. The author occasionally stretches the truth for the sake of a good story." NEVINS I, 68. Bookseller Inventory # 27710
