About this Item

First edition. "The book was dedicated to Home, author of ?Douglas,? the dedication being at first suppressed for fear of injuring Home's reputation as a minister, but restored (in some copies) when he resigned his living. The book, says Hume, ?made a rather obscure entry,? except that Hurd wrote a scurrilous pamphlet against it, which gave him some consolation for its ?otherwise indifferent reception.? The pamphlet, as Hume suspected (Burton, ii. 35), was substantially written by Warburton, although called a letter to Warburton, and ascribed to ?a gentleman of Cambridge,? in order to suggest Hurd as the author.A copy in the Advocates' Library at Edinburgh, with a title-page supposed to be in Hume's handwriting, shows that it originally contained the two essays on ?Suicide? and the ?Immortality of the Soul,? the first of which has been cut out" (DNB). 12mo. [2 (1 blank)], vii, [1 (blank)], 240 pp. Rebound in library buckram, title and author's name gilt-stamped on the spine, spine with paper shelving label, and both covers pressure-stamped by a now-defunct library. Rubber-stamped on the title-page and several other pages. Small loss of paper to top margin of title-page. Library bookplate and charge pocket present. Remnant of paper label and inked and pencilled signatures on the title-page. Scattered pencillings in margins and pencil underlining. Bookseller Inventory # 7509
