Book Description Government Printing Office, Washington, 1886. Hardcover. Book Condition: g. Ex library. 4to. 532 pp. Gilt-stamped olive cloth and spine. An annual report on various aspects of Native American life, compiled by the Bureau of Ethnology. This vol. is titled, "Pictographs of the North American Indians" and is lavishly illustrated with 564 figure illustrations and 83 plates, some in vivid colors with original tissue guards. Contents include but are not limited to: "Pottery of the Ancient Pueblos" Origin and Development of Form and Ornament in Ceramic Art" all by William H. Holmes and "A Study of Pueblo Pottery as Illustrative of Zuni Culture-Growth" by Frank Hamilton Cushing. Library inventory number in white near tail of spine. Scuffing to boards and bumping to crown and foot of spine. Bookplates inside front endpaper and small library stamp and date on title-pages. Hinges starting. p. 205 has a closed tear through its width, otherwise book is in good condition. John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was an American geologist and ethnologist. His efforts towards the reorganization of rival surveys in the West were a factor in bringing about the establishment of the U.S. Geological Survey (1879), of which he served as a director from 1881 to 1894. The following papers have been pub. in this volume (in addition to the general accounting of the director): Pictographs of the North American Indians by Mallery; Pottery of the Ancient Pueblos by Holmes; Ancient Pottery of the Mississippi Valley by Holmes; Origin and Development of Form and Ornament in Ceramic Art by Holmes; A Study of Pueblo Pottery as Illustrative of Zuni Culture-Growth by Cushing. Binding is green cloth with small gilt image of American Indian on front. Corners of cover are rubbed to board; extremities of spine are split and frayed, wtih 1/2" split at bottom; cover edges rubbed; cover is stained and with 2 white spots on front. Interior is in much better shape! Hinges are nice and tight. Pages are clean, with just a hint of toning. Only a few have a soft corner crease. Illustrations are in color and black& white-very attractive. Endpapers have a hint of foxing; previous owner's name written on ffep. Book in new mylar. Bookseller Inventory # H2836
