About this title

Synopsis:

This beautiful 300 page book is filled with dozens of color and black/white reproductions of original frakturs, along with descriptive text, dating from the 1700s. "This book looks at original examples produced in an area of southeastern Pennsylvania where a small religious denomination known as Schwenkfelders settled. It is an introduction to the art, to the area where it was produced it, to the people who produced it, and to the friends and relatives who received it. The art is known as Fraktur. The term originally referred to the fancy, formal 'broken lettering' of texts produced in Europe and early America. Eventually the motifs that served as decorations around these texts, also were referred to as fraktur. What began as a very formal writing style in Europe gradually became an art for the common folk in America. It was often produced in order to inspire or reward children, and was sometimes copied by them. Fraktur and folk art were produced by many Pennsylvania Germans groups and often are identified with the religious groups or denominations that produced them. The Schwenkfelders are a Christian denomination whose original immigrants came to Pennsylvania in the 1730s and settled primarily in the areas northwest of Philadelphia. They and their non-Schwenkfelder neighbors produced some of the finest examples of fraktur and folk art drawings. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, the Schwenkfelders gathered examples of fraktur and preserved them, together with other religious and cultural artifacts, in a library in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Drawn from over a thousand examples in the library's collection, more than 250 color photographs are reproduced in this book. Included also are German texts with their English translations, identifications of previously unknown artists, commentaries about specific pieces, and an overview of the geographical region that cradled the culture which produced this beautiful art form."
