About this Item

A pretty genre scene that captures a bit of a lost past. Unsigned, but very much in the style of Rowlandson, to whom the work is credited. 13 by 21 cm oblong, with frame, 31 by 37.5 cm. The picture is outlined in pencil and filled in with washes of watercolor, to create a gentle country scene, with an enchanting thatched structure, a young woman with children speaking to a more matronly woman, probably the shopkeeper, resting on a basket, a small group of gentry conversing to the side with two ladies in a horse-drawn chaise, and a maiden craning to gaze down at them from an open casement window. The front of the store is littered with empty baskets and the shop windows are crammed with stuff. The work is both sketchy and finished, and its earthy, near monochrome palette contribute to its dream-like quality. This is not a work of sharp satiric humor, but rather one of gauzy nostalgia, even in its day, with the yearning for a simpler country life being the tug then. Some very light soiling, or fox marks, on the picture itself. Mounted handsomely, and with a silver and gilt frame. Some of the silver has been rubbed off. Bookseller Inventory # 004419

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
