4to. [xvi], 280, [2] pp., including errata and privilege leaves. Title in red and black, decorative woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, as well as a large woodcut vignette on the blank verso following the dedication to Charles II. Contemporary vellum, overlapping fore-edges, front hinge cracked at bottom and top of spine, all edges marbled; some browning, mostly preliminaries. With a lovely heraldic bookplate in color and gold dated 11 Mar. 11695, once tipped onto title page and now separated. Overall an excellent copy. First and only edition of this rare historical treatise recounting seven years of significantly unfortunate events in Sicily, such as a massive and devastating outbreak of the Black Death, seismic activity, and repeated attacks from North African pirates. Written in a series of "historical fragments" (three books of five chapters each), these orations frame the distressing events in Sicily while simultaneously functioning as a literary tour de force. Dati even goes one step further adding extensive endnotes to each chapter in which he contextualizes contemporary politics in the classical tradition, showing off his erudition by citing Greek and Roman writers extensively; with this, he positions his own world as a direct descendant of Rome and himself a modern Cicero. This anachronistic approach makes this book a fascinating artifact of literary reception as well as of Neapolitan and Sicilian history.Little is known of Dati outside of this text, in which he describes himself as the "presidente" of the tribunal of the royal court of Naples. The book is quite rare; OCLC locates only one copy in America (at Harvard) and four copies in Europe. Bookseller Inventory #
