About this Item

Quarto in Sixes. Secunda Editio. Four books in one volume, 391pp. continuous pagination, double-columns. François Hotman (1524-1590) was a French Protestant lawyer, jurist and writer, on political subjects. He was the author of a number of juridical treatises and political pamphlets. This work defends limited monarchy, the political privileges of the feudal aristocracy, and the right to depose a "tyrant" who violates these privileges. He also was convinced that Calvin's commentaries and theological treatises were consistent with the New Testament text; consequently, he left the Roman Catholic Church and aligned himself with Geneva Calvinism. Text clean with only a few spots of marginal foxing, bound in ¾ vellum over marbled paper covered boards, boards rubbed, spine title in brown ink, bottom fore-edge with old Latin script in brown ink, from the library of Conte Federico Bernardini, the "so-called" olive oil baron of Italy. OCLC locates 1 copy in Biblioteca Nacional de Espana. Bookseller Inventory # 019235
