About this Item

Translated from the Spanish by Nellie Seelye Evans. New York, 1918. Quarto, quarter cloth. Pp. xxiii, 158. Illustrated. Limited to 310 copies. A very good copy. Scarce. First Edition in English of the first exhaustive study of this noted Spanish painter who lived from 1598-1664. He was a contemporary of Velazquez, and, like Velazquez, his work shows the influence of Caravaggio. Although eclipsed by Murillo during his lifetime, his work exercised influence on the colonial painters of Spanish America, where many of his works were exported. The secularization of Spanish monasteries in 1835 made his work known throughout Europe, where Courbet, Manet, and even Picasso have paid tribute to him. Bookseller Inventory # 488
