About this title

When a night-roaming monster is seen in various sections of the city, few people suspect that it is the creation of the local bagel maker, Harold Frankenbagel.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-5 Pinkwater strikes again, this time stopping short of the completely ridiculous with a fantasy featuring funny food. Harold Frankenbagel is known for his exotic bagels: celery-and-prune, chicken soup, and even ice-cream bagels. In his insane desire to be the greatest bagel maker in history, he creates Bagelunculus. All goes well until this bagel monster gets near some bright blue garlic, takes on a life of its own, and heads to a lox warehouse. Knowing about the powers of a bagel with lox, Harold Frankenbagel and friend seek to stop the monster in its tracks by planning to eat it. The bageloid starts to slow down and then stops, soon to become hard as a rock because, "Bagels always go stale just before you're ready to eat them." This lively pun-infested fantasy, illustrated with full-color computer-produced illustrations, will delight young readers. Older reluctant readers will also enjoy the adult sense of humor in an easily accessible format. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.
