Signed "J. A. Garfield M.C." Franking signature by a future President James A. Garfield was in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry when he was elected to Congress for the first time in 1862. He chose to stay in the Army and was commissioned a major general on September 19, 1863 following his gallantry at Chickamauga. He resigned his commission a few weeks later, finally taking his seat in Congress, a position he would hold for nine terms until his election as president in 1880. Hinsdale was a longtime friend and correspondent of Garfield's, and was the author of an often-referenced two-volume book, Works. Much of their correspondence was published in the Garfield-Hinsdale Letters, edited by Mary L. Hinsdale in 1949. Bookseller Inventory #
