About this Item

Movie-Tie Edition. Text in German. Brief ownership inscription in German. Very good without dust jacket. The basis of the great Fritz LangÕs UFA film ÔWoman in the MoonÕ which premiered on October 15, 1929 in the UFA Palace am Zoo in Berlin. With 18 full-page sepia-toned stills from the film. As husband and wife, Lang and Von Harbou produced a remarkable series of German classic films with Lang directing and Von Harbou writing the screenplays. Their collaborations resulted in Metropolis (1926), M (1931), Dr. Mabuse - The Gambler (1922), The Nibelungen (1924), Spies (1928), The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). Von Harbou had been increasingly attracted to National Socialism and joined the Nazi Party in 1932. Lang was horrified by the rise of Hitler and he and Von Harbou divorced in 1933, and fled Germany in 1934 eventually making his way to Hollywood. Their ÔFrau Im MondÕ film is generally acknowledged as the first serious science fiction film dealing with space travel with its story of the first successful flight to the moon. In the film they created the Òcountdown to zeroÓ number sequence for the rocketÕs launch which was quickly adopted by real rocket scientists and is still used today by NASA. It is also showed for the first time the use of a two stage separating rocket and the first depiction in cinema history of zero gravity. Pioneer rocket scientists Willy Ley & Hermann Oberth were a technical advisors on the film and the resulting picture was very popular with rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and his fellow scientists at the Verein fčr Raumschiffahrt (VfR), the German rocket spaceflight society. The first successfully launched V-2 rocket at the Nazi Luftwaffe rocket development facility in Peenemčnde had the ÔFrau im MondÕ logo painted on its base. Bookseller Inventory # 18383E
