About this title

Synopsis:

Level: Intermediate to Advancing Intermediate organ. 183 More Free Harmonizations of Hymn Tunes. This spiral-bound softcover sheet music book contains hymn tune improvisations arranged for organ. All the pieces have general organ registrations, the full organ score, upper, lower and pedal bass. The success of the first volume (Free Harmonizations of Hymn Tunes by Fifty American Composers) was so successful that it was natural that a second volume should be forthcoming to assist church organists to offer fresh harmonizations (free accompaniments) to aid congregational singing. Fifty-two outstanding church musicians have been invited to contribute one or more settings.

The settings with descants may in every case be used without the descant, or the free harmonization may be played on the second stanza and the descant added on the fourth stanza. In many cases there is a hymn introduc¬tion. In some instances for one hymn tune there may be several harmonizations given by one or more composers, and not infrequently an interlude or modulation has been included.

When using free harmonizations it pays dividends to check the tune against that of the church hymnal so that rhythms and passing notes correspond at the time of performance. Although most of the settings are in the grasp of the average organist, thorough practice of each one is essential for successful use with your congregation.
