Second edition. Octavo. 44, [5] blank pp. Pictorial terracotta wrappers, the rear wrapper lists the 70-odd members of the Philadelphia Supervisory Committee for Recruiting Colored Regiments. Faint vertical crease, else very near fine. The first edition of this work aimed at white officers was issued the previous year (which was more of a prospectus, consisting of only 12 pages and issued, according to the authors, in an edition of 8,000 copies). The present work is considerably enlarged. Pages 29-43 forms the "Roll of Honor" of those successful students, their commands, battles, etc. Rare. Not found in *Afro-Americana*, although *OCLC* locates five copies. Seller Inventory # 463931

The Free Military School enrolled a total of over 1000 applicants The school was established in December, 1863 and and gave brief training to many white civilians and soldiers who aspired to command African American soldiers during its nine months of existence before its Supervisory Committe disbanded the organization on September 15, 1864. 8000 copies of the first edition of this scarce pamphlet were given away before this second edition was printed in early 1864.
