About this Item

These two volumes are First Printings of The Lakeside Press' Christmas volumes for 1974 and 1975 . Ralph H. Bowen did the tranlation and edited these volumes . Bowen and Albert Krebs provide an excellent Introduction . The base map for these volumes was prepared by Donnelley Cartographic Services with beautiful calligraphy by Robert Williams . The volumes are extensively illustrated with photographs , from various American archives , of the scences described by de Hauranne . de Hauranne's father was a close friend of Alexis de Tocqueville and de Tocqueville had many long conversations in which he discussed America with father and son and the son read and reread DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA . de Hauranne was barely twenty-one years old when he arrived in New York . He toured the country from mid-June 1864 to mid-February 1865 and he began to publish his work in August , 1865 in twelve long articles for the Revue des Deux Mondes . His work was received with much attention in a France still shocked by the assassintion of President Lincoln . De Hauranne's analysis of America is perceptive and his descriptions are refreshing -- especially of Lincoln and the War . These volumes are excellent examples of The Lakeside Press' extraordinary publishing standards . Bookseller Inventory # 009249
