About this title

Synopsis:

Friends play many kinds of games with each other: cops and robbers, checkers, tag. The best of friends will make up their own games.

Todd and Kevin’s friendship is built on such a game. However, the rules and premise are far from the typical childhood games. A dispute amongst the two splits them into very different directions: one sees the game for the cruel act that it is, while the other decides it must move to the next level.

Imagine No Country for Old Men crossed with Lord of the Flies, or even imagine if Johnny the Homicidal Maniac were once a little kid. There you have a Friendly Game.

From Booklist:

As passed down from Lord of the Flies, the kids-as-monsters tradition finds its edgiest balance at the intersection of gut-check honesty and immoral excess. This chiller has plenty of the latter, featuring a “game” between two friends that quickly escalates into savagery. Kevin starts it by killing mice for points, but it’s Todd who goes too far, trying to kill a dog and, when that fails, taking it to the next level: a schoolmate. Feeling complicit, Kevin enters Todd’s basement chamber of horrors—a place with plenty of animals in cages and an abundance of power tools—and helps clean up the murder. There is blood aplenty in this relentless black-and-white shocker, most disturbingly splattered across an ever-more-murderous Todd as he glowers through the stark, shadowy, patient panels. It’s impossible not to be moved by such menace, but Todd’s slide into psychosis is so swift that there is little time left to ponder anything. Moments of stillness, mostly between Kevin and his wheelchair-bound mother, provide vital respite. An angry, pitch-black debut. Grades 10-12. --Daniel Kraus
