About this Item

Large quarto. Unpaginated. [32]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over black-stamped blue paper covered boards, with black lettering on spine. Illustrated endpapers and title page. Title signed by illustrator Feodor Rojankovsky. Inspired by a 400-year-old Scotch ballad, "Frog Went A-Courtin'" garnered a Caldecott (in 1956) for Rojankovsky's illustrations. The story seems as absurd and appealing as ever, with its swashbuckling frog hero, maidenly mouse, and nuptials in a meadow rich with rollicking friends, including a banjo-playing bee and a jigging flea. A first state dust-jacket, priced $2.50, with book's review on front flap, and numbers 40-80 underneath Harcourt, Brace and Company's address. Back flap features a review of "Ape in a Cape." Nevertheless, this first state DJ features the Caldecott gold medallion on lower front cover. The book's colophon indicates the year 1955, but does not state "First edition." DJ rubbed and slightly creased along edges, with head and tail of spine partly chipped. Very minor age-toning along paper margin. Dust-jacket in overall good- to good, binding in good+, interior in very good condition. About the illustrator: Feodor Stepanovich Rojankovsky (1891-1970), also known as Rojan, was a Russian émigré illustrator. He is well known both for children's book illustration and for erotic art. He won the 1956 Caldecott Medal for U.S. picture book illustration from the American Library Association, recognizing "Frog Went A-Courtin'" by John Langstaff. Bookseller Inventory # 38995

Proprietor of bookshops in several Los Angeles locations since 1985, he hosts visitors by appointment in our lively bookstore and ships books to collectors, libraries and museums worldwide. Kline occasionally lectures on topics in book collecting and Jewish studies.
