About this Item

"First published in Great Britain 1989 by Constable & Company Limited." So, this is the hardcover first, NOT one of those BCA book-club editions published 'by arrangement with" Constable that the U.K. bulk sellers keep peddling as Constable "firsts." The bad news is that this is a library discard in no better shape than it should be. OK, there are no page-edge stampings, which is nice; in fact the stampings are limited to some small Oxfordshire Libraries "Withdrawn" stamps. (They attempted to sell the thing off for 50p. and apparently failed.) But the reason there are no other bothersome library attachments is presumably because the FFE has been torn out and thrown away, entirely. Spine slanted a substantial half-inch. Tape marks to bottoms of boards where a DJ protector was once attached. The good news? The dust jacket is intact, WHOLE, very-good-plus, never been glued down, is not even price clipped -- original L11.95 net price still showing. Most of the value here presumably lies in the jacket, though text block remains intact and easily read, with only a modest brown stain to page 163. PLEASE NOTE: Although we find it exasperating to repeat ourselves, we are now encountering would-be customers who don't seem able to grasp this standard formulation. So: By stating "Most of the value here lies in the dust jacket," we mean this jacket might considerably enhance the value of a better-condition, jacketless copy, but that -- absent the jacket -- this ex-library book itself is not worth much. So please don't order this ex-library book and then -- ignoring the value of the jacket -- complain "The book isn't worth much because it's ex-library." Isn't that what we just said? FURTHER NOTE: This book is the Constable trade edition, bound in black cloth with silver gilt titles to spine. It stands 8-3/4 inches (222 mm) tall. That means the original dust jacket fits fine and has not been trimmed. Beware "library binding" copies in a mottled gray, faux-leather-patterned, "composition" material with NO exterior titles to spine. Said "bound for library use" Constable copies generally stand 8-7/16ths inches (214 mm) tall. They're also trimmed about 3/16th inch narrower. The width doesn't matter much but the lesser height means jackets on THOSE copies may be trimmed by as much as 1/4-inch to fit, usually visible to the "Collins Crime" logos at bottom of spine and front panel. This full-sized copy totals 284 pp. Reduced from $90. Bookseller Inventory # 003136
