Book Description New York: Wiley & Halsted, 1856., 1856. (Spine title: "Downing's Fruits and Fruit Trees of America.") Fourteenth edition (as stated upon both spine and title page; first published 1845). xiv, 594 pages. Hardcover: H 20.25cm x L 13.5cm. Original olive cloth with embossed decoration to boards, gilt stamped lettering and grape decoration on spine dulled but still easily legible, spine ends bumped with short closed tear at head, light staining on front board, dark discoloration and short nicks occur along rear joint, board corners bumped, slight cock to spine. Original mid-19th century book-shaped light blue ink stamp for "J.W. Platt Bookseller & Stationer Aberdeen Miss." at top right of front free endpaper recto with a second inverted stamp at bottom left of rear free endpaper verso. Ownership signature of R. Gaine (?) in light pencil on front pastedown; extensive notes in pencil on rear two flyleaves; mild to moderate foxing and occasional pencil marks on interior leaves. THE FRUITS AND FRUIT TREES OF AMERICA remains the classic American pomological treatise by American landscape architect A.J. Downing - Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852). A very good- copy made all the more unusual as it is embellished by the aforementioned rare Aberdeen, Mississippi bookseller stamp. As an interesting aside in the state's history, the Tombigbee River planter communities of Aberdeen (Monroe County) and nearby Columbus (Lowndes County), Mississippi only trailed Natchez in antebellum economic prosperity. All three towns were, of course, dependent upon cotton production for their wealth but, however, whereas books with a Natchez association are more readily available, books from noted family or plantation libraries and/or showing original mid-19th century bookseller marks from Columbus and Aberdeen are quite uncommon.
