Many of these stories are godd fun and throw much light on an interesting and exciting phase of American history. Claessens has related some of the tales at hundreds of meetings across our country and he has been repeatedly urged to put them in print. The tales also contain pen portraits of noted American Socialists like Eugene Victor Debs, Morris Hillquit, Meyer London, Abraham Cahan, Heywood Broun, Victor Berger, B. Charney Vladeck, Abraham I. Shiplacoff, Oscar Ameringer and others. August Clacsscns is the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Federation and Executive Secretary, Local New York City, S.D.F. Born in Switzerland in 1885, he arrived in the United States in 1890. Educated in Roman Catholic parochial and public schools, he went to work at the age of 14. He worked as a newsboy, grocery clerk, shipping clerk, street corner astronomer and entertainer. He joined the Socialist Party in 1909, became a speaker and organizer, and made repeated tours from coast to coast. In 1914 Claessens became an instructor in public speaking and other subjects in the Rand School of Social Science. He also taught in Rutgers University Labor and Management extension classes.
