A movie was made from this book in 1937, with Spencer Tracy playing Fred, Franchot Tone as Jimmy and Gladys George as Rose "The story of a World War I veteran who came home from the war and became a gangster when he was unable to find a job - and because he knew how to use a gun. James 'Jimmy' Davis is drafted and ends up in Fred Willis' troop on his way to Europe. Jimmy becomes vicious with his gun and wins a medal. He then steals and marries Fred's nurse girlfriend, Rose Duffy. Back home, years later Rose discovers that Jimmy is a gangster and has him arrested. Rose then finds a job in the circus owned by Fred.
